DXM Abuse Side Effects

DXM, also known as dextromethorphan, is a synthetically-produced substance used as an active ingredient in more than 140 cough syrups and cold medications. When taken in its recommended dose, a maximum of 120mgs a day, it is an effective cough suppressant. The widespread abuse of it can be attributed to a number of factors. For starters, DXM is easily available in the form of cough syrups, which are cheap and easily obtained. Secondly, there is no law prohibiting the use of DXM and is easier to use compared to other drugs.

Thirdly, a proliferation of information on how to extract DXM from other drugs and where to buy DXM powder, among others, has fueled the use of this drug. This drug may be introduced into the body through various ways, including orally, snorting, or injection. The drug exists in various forms, including gelatin capsules, tablets, cough syrups, lozenges, and throat sprays. It has a number of effects on the user’s body. Effects of DXM can be classified into short and long-term effects.

DXM Abuse Side Effects

Many short-term effects of DXM are not serious and do not require medical attention. The effects begin to wear off as the body adapts to the drug. Some of these side-effects include:

  • Nausea
  • Confusion
  • Headaches
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Constipation

In some instances, the body may exhibit some serious side-effects which require medical attention immediately. Some of these serious side-effects include difficulty in urinating, blurred vision, inability to walk steadily, and vomiting, among others. DXM also causes birth defects in children whose mothers use the drug while pregnant. It is worth noting that DXM is a habit-forming drug.

Dependency may form in a few months or years. DXM is responsible for sexual dysfunction, especially in males. DXM may lead to sweating, which may have a peculiar smell. This can be attributed to DXM metabolites. The use of it also leads to impaired mental performance due to the fact that DXM affects normal mental functioning. This drug is also responsible for reducing reaction time. A user may experience hot and cold flushes due to sensory dissociation.

Users of this drug also experience a rise in body temperatures of about 0.5 C due to its dissociative properties. In other instances, some users experience low-grade fever. It’s also responsible for mild hypertension. This is also attributed to the drug’s dissociative effects. A common side effect of DXM use is tachycardia or increased heart rate. In instances where a substantial amount of this drug has been consumed, the heart rate may lead to the user experiencing panic attacks. This is attributed to the stimulant qualities of DXM. Lastly, use of this drug may lead to a mild allergic reaction commonly referred to as the “Robo itch” which, however, does not affect all DXM users.
